ABOUT US
Why Choose Mavlow?
The school's ethos has always been first and foremost about the "enjoyment of dance", and we pride ourselves on teaching the children in a happy, friendly atmosphere. Whilst we do expect the children to be disciplined and work hard towards their exams, we do not believe in putting them under un-due pressure as we want them to enjoy their classes. By building up their work gradually on each grade, this enables all children to reach their fullest potential in examinations.
We also do Medal Tests, which we do alongside exam work. For younger children who are not yet old enough to do the exams, it gives them something to work towards, and also gives them the experience of doing a 'test' in front of an external examiner. Medal Tests are invaluable in teaching children to really dance and perform, as much of the exam syllabi is exercise based.
Once every 2 years, we do a school show, and we include all children from Pre-Primary [4 years of age] upwards, regardless of ability, as we strongly believe every child should have the opportunity to perform on stage. We do not have the Baby Class in the shows as we feel at 2 and 3 years old they are too young. In between are main bi-annual show, we are often asked to do short "displays" for various organisations and community events, in which we usually include some dances from the previous show.
History of the School
Mavlow School of Dance was opened in West Kirby on 2nd June 1978 by Mrs Mavis Lowe, shortly before she relocated to the Wirral with her husband and daughters. The school had already been established for 13 years prior to the relocation, having been based in Wigan, Lancashire.
Initially, classes were held in Westbourne Hall while waiting to move into the school's own premises on Banks Road, which took place on 2nd November 1978. The school became established there and built up a good reputation over the next 10 years. The school then moved to new, larger premises in Blenheim House on The Crescent, in January 1989, and the school has been based there ever since.
In September 1986, Mrs Lowe's eldest daughter Paula also began to teach at the school whilst completing her teaching qualifications, and January 1988 became a full teaching partner in the business.
Fast forward to the present day, and keeping the dance teaching tradition in the family, Paula's daughter Anita graduated with Distinction from Merseyside Dance and Drama Centre, a specialist dance teacher training college, in July 2014, and is fully qualified to teach ISTD Modern, Tap and National. Anita intends to complete her RAD Ballet qualification in the near future.
