SCHOOL FOUNDER

Mavis Lowe (Miss Mavis) - ARAD AISTD [MB] ADA [ASS][BB]
Founder of Mavlow School of Dance, Miss Mavis began dancing at the age of 3. She was taught by her two (grown up) sisters, Marjorie and Irene Ellick, who had already established the Excelsior School of Dancing. At the age of 16, Miss Mavis won a place at the Hammond School in Chester. Whilst there, she gained her teaching qualifications in RAD Ballet and ISTD Modern + Tap.
Highlights of her time at Hammond include being one of the dancers selected to demonstrate the RAD work to Margot Fonteyn, who created much of the RAD Syllabus at that time. Also, she did a pantomime at the Royal Court with Tommy Steele and the Steelmen, and was one of the teachers that taught him to dance. After the pantomime, Tommy Steele and the dancers were invited to perform on the television program, 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium'. The following year, back at the Royal Court, she did a pantomime with Ronnie Renald.
After leaving Hammond, Miss Mavis decided to take the teaching route in her career, deciding this was where her heart truly lay. She began to teach alongside her sisters at the Excelsior School.
In 1965, having married and relocated to Ashton in Makerfield (Wigan), she decided to open her own school, Mavlow School of Dance, although she continued to travel and teach at the Excelsior School for a few more years as well, before leaving to concentrate solely on Mavlow. After running the school for 13 years, she relocated to West Kirby because of her husband's work and on 2nd June 1978, she re-opened Mavlow School of Dance in it's new location, after successfully securing a teacher to take over the school in Ashton. However, there was one pupil, Donna, who actually commuted all the way from Ashton every week, so she could continue classes at Mavlow with Miss Mavis until she went to University!
As the years went by, Miss Mavis gradually cut down the number of days she taught on, her daughter Paula having taken over the main running of the school, along with her daughter Anita. Miss Mavis retired from teaching in July 2018, 40 years after establishing the school in West Kirby.
Miss Mavis sadly passed away on 11/07/2024 after battling a short illness.
