CLASSES

Children's Classes
Baby Class
Baby Class is the class for children aged 2 1/2 to 4 years, covering Ballet and Tap during a 30 minute class. Ballet - Structured class with nursery rhymes, dancing with dollies and other short rhymes, learning basic steps. Tap - includes all the basic steps, holding hands in a circle. Children imitate in Baby Class, building a foundation which can be built on later.
Pre-Primary
Pre-Primary is the class for children aged 4 to 5 years, covering Ballet, Modern Jazz and Tap during a 50 minute class. Tap - Structured class covering all the basic steps, but done in a line rather than holding hands in a circle [like in Baby Class]. Ballet - different aspects covered each week in a four weekly cycle. Modern Jazz - here the children work on their flexibility in a fun way.
Children's Classes Age 5+
At 5 years old, we split the classes into Ballet, and Modern Jazz + Tap. Many children will carry on with all three subjects and some choose one of the two classes, but we strongly encourage doing both. It is worth considering doing the two classes as it gives the children much more variety, and also, the subjects help each other, for example, the strength gained in Ballet helps the Modern Jazz work, whilst the flexibility gained in Modern Jazz is good for Ballet. Tap helps to develop rhythm and timing in all subjects.
At this point, the children begin to study the RAD Ballet Syllabus, and the ISTD Modern Jazz and Tap Syllabi, working towards Examinations and ADA Medal Tests. Ballet Classes are 1 hour long, while Modern Jazz and Tap Classes are between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes in length [depending on grade, number of pupils etc.].
A few children also have Private Lessons to further their study of dance, taking part in Dancing Competitions three times a year, in February, Easter and September, with other opportunities available as well, enabling them to cover other subjects besides their class subjects. Private Lessons are 30 minutes long. We must stress, however, that any pupil wishing to do a Private Lesson MUST take class in all subjects; Ballet, Modern Jazz and Tap, as these are essential to providing the strength and stamina for the Private Lesson work. For further information about Private Lessons and what they entail, please visit our "COMPETITIONS" page.
