COMPETITIONS
AN OVERVIEW
At Mavlow School of Dance, we do three main competitions a year, the Allied Dancing Association Easter Festival, and the Ellesmere Port Autumn and Winter Festivals, which are held in September and February respectively. Further opportunities are available at teacher discretion. Pupils with Private Lessons spend time learning and perfecting dances in a variety of dance styles ready for the Competitions, which are always great fun for all involved!
We have a fairly small competition team here at Mavlow School of Dance, but there may be scope to grow it in the future. At the moment we only enter Solos in competitions, but in the past we have entered Duets, Trios and even Troupes so this could be another option in the future. We'll see!
Our current team is made up of Rukshitha (Team Captain), Freya, Lizzie, and newcomers to the team for 2023, Sophia, Marianne, and Tallulah. We've finished our Competition run for 2022, our next competition will be the Ellesmere Port Winter Festival in February 2023, followed by our original comp, the ADA Easter Festival, where the whole team will be competing, and this will be the first competition for our newbies. Traditionally when we have new dancers join the team, their first competition will always be the ADA Easter Festival, which has been our main comp for decades.
HOW TO JOIN THE COMPETITION TEAM
So how do children end up on the competition team? A variety of ways actually. We keep close tabs on the children during class for anyone who might show potential, and will approach parents if we think they would be suitable for a place on the team. If you would like your child to have a place on the team, or would like to know more, please ask and we can give you more information. We never turn anyone away who wants to do a Private Lesson for competitions, but please note, students who wish to be on the Competition Team must meet certain criteria. The main one is that they must attend all Ballet, Modern Jazz & Tap Classes. Students doing Private Lessons require a lot of extra strength in order to be able to compete at a high level, so being in the studio three times a week (their two regular classes, and the Private Lesson) is absolutely vital. In an ideal world, students on the team should regularly achieve high marks in examinations, and always work at a very high standard. They must also be willing to practise and stretch at home every day as well (this is highly encouraged, and pupils are regularly reminded to practise at home). We also expect pupils on the Competition Team to set the example to other pupils in the school, on hard work, behaviour and attitude in class.
UNIFORM FOR COMPETITION PUPILS
Students on the Competition Team require the following compulsory items:
1) Mavlow Tracksuit - Students must wear the Mavlow Tracksuit to come to and at Competitions, and should come to class wearing it as well.
2) Mavlow Polo Shirt - this will be custom made for you at Cains in Heswall, this black polo shirt will have the Mavlow Logo on the left, and the students name on the right (see picture below)
