WHAT WE OFFER
The foundation of any dancer is a strong technique. Whenever you go to the theatre, or see any form of dance on television or in films, every single dancer you see will have started off in their local dance school, learning the basics, working hard on technique, becoming strong in the core dance subjects of Ballet, Tap and Modern Jazz, taking examinations, entering competitions, all things that helped shape them to become the performers they are today.
We are proud to teach classes in RAD Ballet and ISTD Modern Jazz & Tap. RAD Ballet has long been considered the highest quality in Ballet Training, and ISTD recognised as the highest quality for Tap & Jazz. We also enter all pupils for ADA Medal Tests, we do a school show every two years, which every pupil aged four and upwards will take part in, and we also have a Competition Team who take part in four competitions a year.
Here at Mavlow School of Dance, we are proud to have a strong focus on technique, helping children achieve their maximum potential in examinations, whether they are with us just once a week, or on the Competition Team and perhaps have aspirations of going on to dance professionally in the industry. Your children can be guaranteed high quality dance training if they spend their time with us.
RAD BALLET
The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is a famed institution, often considered the best when it comes to Ballet Training, and we are proud to be able to offer RAD Ballet Grades here at Mavlow School of Dance, from Primary through to Grade 7, and some students have also taken vocational examinations Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate as well. The syllabus is structured, age appropriate, and will help children become strong dancers as they progress through. The fabulous orchestrated examination music is also a big hit, introducing children to some famous pieces of Classical Music along the way.
ISTD MODERN JAZZ & TAP
The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) have been forerunners and leaders in the genres of Modern Jazz & Tap for a long time, and we are proud to be Full Teaching Members of the ISTD and able to provide the Modern Jazz & Tap Grades here, from Primary all the way through to Grade 6, and additionally in Tap, Intermediate, Advanced 1 & Advanced 2.
We start teaching set exercises as early as our Pre-Primary Class (where we cover the Primary Modern work), and we use the excellent Pre-Primary Tap Syllabus for beginners in Primary Class, as this teaches a lot of basic steps which we see developed throughout the Grades. Additionally, the Modern Syllabus has exercises for boys which are designed to help support and develop their natural strength.
ADA MEDAL TESTS
The Allied Dancing Association (ADA) has been running for over 100 years, and as a society is well known to be run by teachers, for teachers. We have been members of the Allied Dancing Association since the school began, and we enter our students for Medal Tests through the Allied, with children entering as young as age 4. Children love to receive their Medals & Certificates every year, and they gain a lot of confidence from being able to learn and perfect dances to perform in front of an external examiner from a young age. Children take Medals in Ballet, Modern Jazz & Tap, and for those on the Competition Team that will also include other subjects such as National, Classical Greek, Character and Song & Dance to name but a few. We also enter our Competition Team into the Allied’s biggest event of the year, the ADA Easter Festival.
ISTD NATIONAL
Another branch of the ISTD is the National Dance Faculty, which Anita is fully qualified to teach. National is essentially Folk Dance, and the Grades and Vocational Examinations teach folk dances from home nations England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, as well as all around the world. It is a subject rich in culture and is very educational, as the syllabus encourages children to research the country from which they are learning a dance.
The National Dance Faculty also hosts the ‘National Dance Awards’ each year, a competition we have just started entering the last couple of years. What’s interesting about this competition is that there is also a “class” element, where students simply go in and take part in a class, learning new steps, and a small routine, which they perform for the watching audience and three class adjudicators, with three prizes awarded at the end of the class to three dancers who stand out. This year, for 2026, we intend to invite all Ballet Pupils (who cover an element of National work in the Character portion of Ballet Class) to take part. Letters will be given out in September.
At present, we don’t have room in the timetable for examination classes in this fabulous subject, but it is something we revisit every year and hope to be able to fit in, in the not too distant future.
